Hadeland Glassverk - Presentation
The history of Hadeland Glassverk
Founded in 1762, the Hadeland glassworks (Hadeland GLASSVERK) is one of Norway's oldest industrial companies. It has maintained continuous production from the very first oil lamp to design collections in a range of jewel colors and exquisite patterns that are today synonymous with Hadeland Glassverk.
On the eve of its 260th year, the HADELAND team revisited 8 of the early models by Jonas Hidle and Arnulf Bjorshol, produced between the early 1990s and early 2000s. The team of artisans who handcraft these wonderful luminaires continues to push innovation and challenge the magnificent material that forms the famous Hadeland glass.
At Hadeland Glassverk, an entire team is dedicated to designing new lighting fixtures, as well as collaborating with the broader design community by creating custom lighting for a wide range of interiors and environments, resulting in ever more exceptional creations.
The team works on both interior and exterior lighting, designing solutions for a wide range of projects that allow Hadeland's talented team to explore the limits of the material.
Functional, expressive, creative, curious, engaging, and authentically Norwegian, such is the beauty of Hadeland Glassverk.
The incredible Oslo Opera House project
The 50 m² chandelier illuminating the main stage of the Oslo Opera House was designed as part of a collaborative project between the renowned firm Snøhetta Architects and Maud Gjeruldsen Bugge, design manager at Hadeland Glassverk. The chandelier was handmade at Hadeland Glassverk. It measures 7 meters wide, weighs 8.5 tons, and consists of 5800 individual crystal elements and 8000 LED lights. Each crystal piece is mouth-blown and hand-ground in the glassworks, following centuries-old techniques cherished and passed down through craftsmanship.
The manufacturing process
All lighting production takes place at Hadeland Glassverk. The wooden molds are made by our own mold maker. The lamps are mouth-blown using the same techniques as they did 250 years ago. The cooling process takes from 4 hours to several days, depending on the thickness of the glass. Finally, the lamps undergo coarse grinding, fine grinding, and then they are polished. More than 10 artisans, men and women, leave their personal touch on each luminaire.
